10 -the number of nominees for this year's National Book Awards. Fiction nominees include Colson Whitehead, Karan Mahajan and Adam Haslett. Nonfiction contenders include Viet Thanh Nguyen and Heather Ann Thompson. The five finalists in each category will be announced next month and the winners on November 16.
