The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) condemned both gender-based violence and mob justice after the “torching of a Limpopo man burnt to death by a mob after he allegedly killed his girlfriend” on Tuesday.

Media reports said the 36-year-old man had throttled his girlfriend and hid her in the home they’ve shared in Ngwaritsi village on Monday night.

“Mob justice will only lead to lawlessness and a vicious cycle of violence‚" said Sanco spokesperson Jabu Mahlangu on Tuesday.

He said urgent action was needed “to restore the confidence of communities in the criminal justice system to address mob justice incidents that are on the increase”. “

Communities must report crime to authorities in the criminal justice system instead of taking the law into their own hands. Vigilantism creates a cycle of violence that undermines the rule of law.”

The situation‚ Mahlangu suggested‚ could be rectified by quicker police response times‚ increased visibility and regular investigation progress updates.

He also condemned the “callous murder of the woman”‚ and called “for united action against gender-based violence and urged couples who are experiencing challenges in their relationships to seek professional help before matters get out of hand”.
