Dr Alex Boraine, the former vice-chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), has died at the age of 87.

He passed away at home in his sleep during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

"He was asleep when he died, so the exact time of death was not known," his son Jeremy Boraine told TimesLIVE.

Jeremy said that his father had been in remission from cancer and "had a fall last week".

"It was a number of things. He was 87 years old, so I think his system just closed down," he said.

Jeremy said the family were supporting each other. "We all just gathered together and are supporting each other. We are planning a memorial service for him."

This is a developing story.
