No trace of four kidnapped in Iraq

Three years after their husbands were abducted in Iraq, the wives of the so-called "Baghdad Four" have "no idea" if the men are dead or alive.

Marie Enslin, whose husband Johann, 48, was one of those who disappeared on December 10 2006, wiped tears from her cheeks as she appealed for help from President Jacob Zuma.

"If they are dead - God forbid - please be compassionate and hand over their remains so we can find closure," she sobbed.

The only contact the women have had with their husbands was a short phone call from Callie Scheepers, 48, to his wife, Laurika, two weeks after he was kidnapped.

The women, who spoke at the Pretoria Press Club yesterday, said that in the first year after the abduction they were warned by their husbands' employer, Safenet Security Services, not to talk about it because this would "jeopardise" the men's safety.

Enslin said "our hope is [that] our president and his new government would do more" because there had been "no heartfelt response from the previous government".

Kgomotso Molobi, head of public diplomacy at the department of international relations, said "three years are without meaning for family and friends of loved ones who have disappeared without trace".
