The official Xinhua News Agency cited Shanghai's municipal information office as saying three people died. A man answering the phone there confirmed the deaths and said one other crew member was seriously injured, with the other three slightly injured.

The man, surnamed Wang, said all of the crew members are foreigners but he did not know their nationalities.

China Central Television said the plane's tail struck the ground on takeoff, and an airport warehouse also caught fire in the crash on Saturday morning.

The report showed billowing thick black smoke at the scene, with police officers blocking closer access.

A reporter from Shanghai's Oriental Satellite Television told CCTV that the tail of the plane had broken in two or three parts, and hundreds of firefighters were spraying fire retardants on the plane.

The crash occurred at 7:40 a.m., Xinhua said. It said the plane, which had been headed to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, veered off the runway and burst into flames.

The plane was operated by Zimbabwe-based Avient Aviation, Xinhua said.

Calls to the Zimbabwe Embassy in Beijing went unanswered on Saturday morning.

CCTV said two runways at the airport were shut down. A woman answering the phone at the airport's information desk said international and domestic departing flights were delayed.

Shanghai is China's largest city and its economic capital. The Pudong airport is located on the eastern edge of the city, by the East China Sea.

In June 2008, two Chinese air force jets collided in Inner Mongolia, with both pilots parachuting to safety.

In June 2006, a Chinese military plane crashed in eastern China's Anhui province, killing all 40 people aboard.

Picking up arms and ammo for Comrade MurGarbage?

Not any more, it ain't.

And if they haven't yet learned to drive buses and trucks safely why would anyone entrust a hundred million dollar aircraft to a local pilot or a local technician?

As a Zimbabwean I feel ashamed to come from a country ruled by a sick dictator who killed my familly in 1985. I hope that cargo plane was not carrying weapons beacuse Zimbabwe is ruled by witches that are thirst for human blood. I would like to know from anyone on how one can sue the Zimbabwean gorvenment for the killing it did to some of my tribe of about 20 000 who were killed. My parents perished as well as many people I know. Some people were buried in mass graves that I can show anyone interested. How does one goes about reporting this to the Hague? Please assist!

I regret sincerely having to comment in this vain, as Zim used to be such a great place!

Nobody will come to your assistance to 'rescue' Zim - the place no longer has anything viable going for it.

Everything would have to be rebuilt: the roads, rail, power generation, water reticulation and purification, rural and urban infrastructure, transport, education, health, agriculture -EVERYTHING!

It currently has no worth!
Nothing is really worth buying - everything will have to be recapitailised!
There are no longer any skills left!

The country has been totally vandalised!

The ruling elite that are left there are also of no help or use - don't you think?

Those crew members that lost their lives were americans. It is shame that everytime things go wrong in Zim people who h@te president Mugabe want to blame him. Those crew members were not employed by pres Mugabe. People like pres Mugabe should be praised for being brave to stand against those who continue to exploit most african countries. The unfortunate part of pres Mugabe regime is that zimbabweans started to fight each another because the west started to fund MDC so as to stop the changes that were being implemented by ZANU-PF. Hope this unity goverment will result inpeace and prosperity for all zimbabweans

Thanks bro. I am Zimbabwean too and that Thela person is a liar. Trying to justify living in other people`s countries. What mass graves? Who got killed when? Is it right trhat 2% of the population own 96% of the country. Or as in SA 10% owning 90%. I like Zim now. Things are more evenly distributed. No more great swathes of land owned by few individuals. Even MDC agree about this. I would say visit Zim before commenting. Most of you would be surprised. Think about it. Less crime, less shacks, less HIv.and we are supposed to be the ones in trouble..........lol
