Miley smokes weed. So what?

I kind of have a problem with Miley Cyrus.

I usually can’t be bothered about the way celebrities conduct themselves, but when my 10-year-old niece’s role model gyrates against a married man’s crotch and uses a foam hand as a penis on which to pretty much masturbate on stage, I have an issue with it.

I know she’s not doing all of this blindly – she’s got hundreds of people creating the brand that is Miley, and they’re doing a good job of it. You have to be living under a rock not to know who she is and what she’s about.

And Wrecking Ball has got to be her best song, if not one of the top singles of the year.

Surprisingly though, I have no problem with her lighting up a jay on stage.

Aside from marijuana being legal in Amsterdam, nobody has a problem with Snoop doing it.

Why does smoking it have to be mutually exclusive to those who hold the 'weed-consuming' image like Bob Marley and Snoop?

Why should smoking weed be the thing that sends her reputation up in smoke when it's her general public behaviour that should?

I have no problem with people smoking weed in general.

We know Miley smokes weed. We’ve seen the paparazzi pictures. We’ve seen the headlines. That’s how she is offstage.

And if Miley is being real by lighting up on stage; hell yes! Give me more of your real nature than that plastic, manufactured, publicist-approved image any day.

I don’t want to see your boobs. I don’t want to see your butt. I don’t want my niece to emulate your sluttiness.

But what I do want is for people to get over it and accept that smoking weed is just another thing.

Thing is, even though I don’t like her music, Miley is undeniably talented. Wrecking Ball is proof of that. So are her live performances and covers.

She doesn’t have to stick her tongue out in that distasteful manner. She doesn’t have to pose naked – whether it’s for Terry Richardson or not.

She doesn’t need the gimmicks. People love her anyway, and she would have more longevity in the business.

What she’s doing is giving herself a shelf life.

Regardless, smoking a joint on stage is not going to damage her. What is damaging her is everything else she does.

Whatever we think of Miley, we click on stories about her day after day. We complain and whine and bitch about her skimpy clothes and cunnilingus-like sticking out tongue but until we stop giving her the attention, she’s winning.

Society doesn't change until we do; we have the power. If we don't change the way we consume media, we have no one to blame but ourselves for the way celebrities behave.
