Sam Ditshego, Kagiso: There are those like Zackie Achmat who question Jon Qwelane's reported appointment as ambassador to Uganda on the basis of the allegation that he is a homophobe. A homophobe is a person who hates or fears homosexual people. If Jon Qwelane is a homophobe, then he is not the only one.

This hatred or fear is engendered by the fact that many don't understand why homosexuality exists because there is no conclusive study on what causes it. Moreover, there are also cultural beliefs that perpetuate the hatred.

Be that as it may, Qwelane shouldn't be lynched by the likes of Achmat and others, who did the same with the late Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, using their pseudo science to make headlines in all the newspapers.
