Sensational headlines insult readers

Maurice Smithers, Yeoville | 03 March, 2010 23:380 Comments

Maurice Smithers, Yeoville: The Times has very clever sub-editors who have a way with words.

But sometimes, they resort to the downright sensational as they did this week with their 'Hogan slams ANC, Eskom deal' headline.

A scan of the article reveals that Barbara Hogan was pressed into commenting on the issue of the ANC investing in the development of new power stations through their Chancellor House facility.

She said that she thought the arrangement was "undesirable". Nowhere does it say that she "slammed" the deal.

The use of excessive tabloid-style language insults the intelligence of your readers and casts doubt on your credibility.
