Madeleine, light and dark
Readers letters: The Sunday Times of February 28 published an obituary on my sister, Madeleine van Biljon, who passed away during the week.
It was written by Chris Barron, who said very little about the fact that Madeleine will be remembered as a well-loved journalist, writer, cook, art- and music-lover.
The wording of his obituary was in part untruthful, unnecessary and hurtful to her brother, sisters, children and grandchildren. - Polla Glatthaar, by e-mail
- Madeleine van Biljon's obituary, written by Chris Barron, was magnificent. He perfectly captured the mythical grande dame of food, journalism, conversation, literature and much more.
Unlike too many obituaries that read like faux press releases or sickly sweet advertorials, his was a tribute that forthrightly captured her life's chiaroscuro: a life well lived to its fullest, with its raunchy mixture of light and dark. - Herman Lategan, Sea Point
