Experience, competence essential

Mike Deats, by e-mail | 05 April, 2010 23:38

Mike Deats, by e-mail: Jonathan Jansen's article "Incapacitated by incompetents" (April 1) should be framed and put up in every influential decision maker's office in South Africa.

Experience is absolutely essential in leading, directing and managing people. Job hopping for better remuneration - customary nowadays - doesn't improve experience.

Employment policies have driven experienced people out of skilled positions in South Africa, such that many municipalities cannot manage simple water treatment/sewerage plants.

We also cannot afford experienced senior prosecutors in the justice department being demoted to fill menial positions to settle old scores. Examples of incompetence in the industries that I successfully managed are countless.

Competence should be the prime consideration when filling any position. South Africa's prosperity salvation will not come from quotas, which will only lead to further skill migration.
