Schooling kids for varsity: Brilliant

Mary Boyd, Port Alfred | 20 May, 2010 22:44

Mary Boyd, Port Alfred: I want to comment on the notion Professor Jonathan Jansen outlines in his column "Catch 'em young, send 'em up" (May 20), of "Tshepo" attending university while still at high school.

What a brilliant idea!

In 1999, I entered East London Technikon to do a diploma in fine art. I think I was older than the lecturers, never mind the students!

However, I was appalled to find the young black students - despite their being embryonic fine artists - completely at sea, when it came to history of art. These poor kids had no background of history for reference. And, the saddest part of it all was that if they failed art history, they would have to repeat the year.

So, yes please, endeavour to implement this brilliant idea.
