Won the war, but the peace elusive

John Vorster, Napier | 20 June, 2010 23:510 Comments

John Vorster, Napier:The government missed a golden opportunity by not including Afrikaans as a broadcasting language.

It would, at the very least, have acknowledged the millions who speak an historic language born in Africa. This could have reduced a growing number who feel alienated. A further plus would have been more diverse support for soccer.

Why is it that we miss such subtle moments to make this country greater and more inclusive? Little things like this contribute far more to the unification of a divided people than all the earth-warming hot air from politicians.

This request is not politically motivated but merely a suggestion that, after 16 years of democracy, we appear to have won the war but have not found the peace.
