Comments out of order

Vuyisa Qabaka | 21 June, 2010 10:490 Comments

Vuyisa Qabaka: I have just read an 'opinion' piece by Mr. Mondli Makhanya of the Sunday Times, in today's paper. I am writing this complaint in my individual or personal capacity, as Mr. Makhanya's comments have negatively affected me personally.

I would like to lay a complaint against Mr. Makhanya, not for sharing his opinion (which I adjudged to be ignorant and misinformed) but for his negative portrayal of my cultural practices and beliefs.

In my opinion, Mr. Makhanya's comments are totally of order, and to me they amount to "hate speech" and could be seen to be inciting lawlessness, by effectively calling our tradition a genocide.

Furthermore, Mr. Makhanya has taken it upon himself to adjudicate the practice of millions of Xhosa men who believe in their sacred traditions. This is strongly evident in the condescending tone (and sarcasm) of his article.

A note to Mr. Makhaya: I am a firm supporter of press freedom in our country, but not when it infringes on my rights as citizen.
