India, Brazil, worse than SA

Alan Campbell, Gardens | 11 July, 2010 00:000 Comments

Alan Campbell, Gardens : Having read Boris Johnson's article "This country's greatest goal" (July 4), I do hope he is feeling better about holding premium events like Fifa 2010 in poor places.

Why, the next World Cup is in Brazil and the favelasin the major cities of Rio and Sao Paulo make our "shantytowns" look like the Barbican in London! Much closer to home, the Commonwealth Games kick off in a few months - in New Delhi, capital of a country with a per capita GDP about one-fifth of South Africa's! Does Mayor Johnson know about the caste system. How's that for "inequity"?

On a technical note, the World Cup trophy is no longer called the "Jules Rimet": that was given to Brazil in 1970. The replacement trophy is known as the Fifa World Cup Trophy.
