Media the eyes and ears of the people

Puleng Mmila, Seokodibeng | 02 August, 2010 22:590 Comments

Puleng Mmila, Seokodibeng: I am strongly opposed to the proposed law that would create a media tribunal, and to the Protection of Information Bill. They smack to me of an abuse of power.

Those who argue that media self-regulation is not enough either have skeletons in their closet or do not want the masses to know how taxes are being spent.

If it wasn't for the media the Selebi case would have gone nowhere. Remember Thabo Mbeki telling us to trust him and that the police commissioner was innocent?

Do you think we would have known that tenderpreneurship is rife in the ruling party without the media?

That our money is used to buy flowers for ministers' girlfriends?

That the ANC is making a profit out of electricity hikes through its shares at Hitachi?

Why are only the media targeted with a spurious tribunal?

Because it is the ears , eyes and voice of the public, and the ruling party does not want us to know about its shenanigans.
