Let us laud heroes while they are alive
Jeffrey Sehume, Kwa-Thema: For the next few days, tributes will pour in decrying the loss of another creative giant, writer Lewis Nkosi.
Nevertheless, a cynic might well ask why he died in the shadows of the unknown. How can we explain the troubling fact that his immense talent was known only to a few learned elite? Is it because we are robbed of the wonder in such talent by our pervasive illiteracy rates? It is inadequate that our heroes only come to our attention when they are no longer in our midst.
The heritage Nkosi has left us remains outstanding for revealing the possibilities of literary resistance politics against an unjust system.
