Zille stands by Mazibuko as she trounces Trollip

DA leader Helen Zille has lashed out at members of her party who claimed she was unfairly interfering in the parliamentary leadership race.

This is after her protegee, Lindiwe Mazibuko, trounced Athol Trollip to become the DA's number one in parliament and the youngest parliamentary leader of an opposition party.

Addressing journalists following Mazibuko's landslide victory, Zille stood her ground.

"I am a full member of the parliamentary caucus and I would be abdicating my responsibilities if I did not give leadership and if I did not have a close relationship with the leadership of caucus," she said.

Mazibuko, who enlisted the services of a public relations company to boost her public campaign, was flanked by Zille and Trollip as her victory was announced at a press conference in parliament yesterday.

Although Zille refused to disclose the winning margin, The Times has learnt that Mazibuko got 51 votes to Trollip's 30.

On the eve of the elections, senior DA MPs close to Trollip accused Zille of openly campaigning for Mazibuko. The Sunday Times reported of a meeting, at which Zille was allegedly present, in which Trollip was asked to step back and not contest the post. Trollip declined to do so.

Commenting for the first time on the these claims, Zille said as DA leader, she had every right to know and have influence on whatever was taking place in the DA caucus.

"I will continue with the close working relationship with the leader of our parliamentary caucus because that is what I have to do; I am the leader of the DA, I've been elected to give this party direction."

Veteran MP Dene Smuts penned a strongly worded statement that was widely published in the media, in which she detailed her reasons for supporting Trollip in the fierce leadership battle that has thrown divisions within the DA into the open.

But Zille hit back at Smuts, saying the veteran justice spokesman was off the mark in her criticism.

"Internal democracy in the DA is alive and thriving . Dene doth protest too much, - she does her job very well in legislating [but] in this issue she protested too much," Zille said.

Mazibuko is the first black woman to lead the National Assembly's official opposition parties.

She will lead the DA oversight on President Jacob Zuma and his deputy, Kgalema Motlanthe.

Trollip said he would remain as an ordinary MP until his five-year term expires in 2014.

........Hogarth calls the DA the Desperate Alternative..... In view of the hyenas at the ANC ripping each other for the chunks of carcass, are they going to get infected with the same tendencies???........

Hogarth is so biased (pro-Cope and follows Avusa's anti-white ethos) that were he to praise Zille, half the DA would desert it.

Since Trollip is values-driven it will be interesting to see if the hyena-tendencies that have entrenched themselves in the ANC manifest themselves in the DA.

What the ANC and their tolls don't get is that internal contests are as much a part of democracy as fighting elections.

Hai, sometime my compatriots can be very strange, I mean why as South Africans love LEGITIMIZING MEDIOCRITY? Why?

If it is not in sports (Bafana bafana dancing their socks off celebrating a DRAW...A DRAW PEOPLE). Then its politics, the president, His Excellency JG Zuma (Nxamalala, Msholozi) fires to Cabinet Ministers and suspends the Top Cop, we have people using this as measure of his indecisiveness or decisiveness.

Now its the Lindiwe Mazibuko chick.... Yes its a major coup for her political growth, but to use her winning her party's caucus structure & her being a DA spokesperson as yard stick that will bring the elusive Black vote to the DA...PLEASE MAN!!! Be real, she, herself has admitted that in RSA, race plays a big part in politics. It will take sometime to convince a significant number of Black people that the DA is party that belongs to all, even if, they were to vote for a Black kid who came from kwaShembe or eManyiseni, or Gomora etc (real poverty stricken areas).

Lindiwe represents what white people feel comfortable with when they see or view Black people.

C'mon, let's stop exagerating things like US media & celebrities who claim that Tupac & Notorious Big were ASSASSINATED, yet we all know that the 2 superstars were shot not assassinated.

South Africans have a thing with legitimizing mediocrity

Lindiwe must start speaking Nguni sometimes. At the moment she fits the stereotype of how white people want darkies to act and talk. I swear i thought she was a white woman speaking on SAFM this morning until they said her name.

She's highly intelligent though.

I fully agree.

However, I am a bit uneasy with the assertion that 'she is highly intelligent though'. I wonder if such a description would be flagged around had she been white.

Even Zille is highly intelligent but very few people keep on reminding us of that. Could it be that as a white person she is expected to be 'intelligent', and that there is nothing uncharacteristics with an 'intelligent' white person? I sense subliminal racism at play here.

@ The Afrikan, I have never even heard her speaking isiSwati (and she's from there), Trolip is Engish but he can converse in Afrikaans & speaks isiXhosa fluently. I am not at all saying her speaking any Nguni language that will validate her being uMnguni, I am not.

However everytime I look at her and listen to her, I think of these words by Steve Biko ,

“Tradition has it that whenever a group of people has tasted the lovely fruits of wealth, security and prestige it begins to find it more comfortable to believe in the obvious lie and accept that it alone is entitled to privilege”.

Intelligent she is, klapping a white middle age man in the DA is no easy feat

I have no idea what the Steve Biko quote is meant to illustrate? Are you using it as a dig against the ruling elite with their shiny cars, expense accounts, tenders etc... , or against the new sushi guzzling BEE's, or against someone deserving who is just emerging in a leadership role?

@ BobbyBob, that to me Lindiwe Mazibuko represent the rich black elite that pays no responsibility to the cause of emancipating not only a few from poverty but all citizens of this land. I see no difference from her to WC Premier or Kenny Kunene or Ronald Lamola. This is my opinions abt her.

What I am not taking away from Lindiwe is the fact that, she is intelligent, probably she's a workholic I don't. I have two friends (a male and female) both are Chattered Accountants and have both been promoted to serve on the executive boards of their respective companies. This was not just by poor luck, they worked hard and earned to be there (emerging in leadership responsibilities and authorities). To add honey on the sweetner, they both Black Africans in the mid 30s.

So I will never b against any1 (irrespective how I feel abt one's polical allegiance/views/membership).

Trust I have made myself clear now

Ndlwananhle-kayi-1 I am curious, how will you rate Lindiwe and Juluis? They are both young and successful politicians. But they have different ideologies. Who is the best for South Africa?

@Mabhebeza EC. Your comment sounds racist. What in your opinion is a true African? Bear in mind the human race originated in Africa.
