ANC bash to cost more than R100 million

The ANC's centenary birthday celebrations will cost more than R100 million, the party said on Tuesday.

"It will not cost less than R100-million, it is costly," ANC national chair Baleka Mbete told reporters in Johannesburg.

"It is not cheap but we believe... it is worth it. Future and younger generations need to know where we come from."

The ANC was gathering archives and information about its history from around the world to be housed in one place.

"Some of the work is just priceless," Mbete said.

"Friends" of the ANC were coming forward and helping with funding.

About 120 000 people were expected to attend the main 100-year birthday celebration in Mangaung, in the Free State, in January next year.

"We are now, as of today, 60 days away from the anticipated January 8 celebration to commemorate the birth of the oldest and surviving liberation movement on the continent."

Mbete said the ANC had been preparing for the celebrations for the past two years. The main bash would start on January 6 and go on until January 8 2012.

It would start in Waaihoek, in the Western Cape, which was the founding place of the ANC 100 years ago, Mbete said.

The weekend would include an interfaith night vigil, an awards ceremony, a traditional cleansing and restoration ceremony, a presidential centennial gala and then the main celebration at the Mangaung rugby stadium.

ANC president Jacob Zuma was expected to deliver the centennial address at the stadium on January 8. Many international guests were also expected to attend.

"[They] will be given the opportunity to speak about their relationship with the ANC," said Mbete.

A number of African heads of state were coming, but Mbete said she could not give any more details.

The centenary celebrations would continue through 2012, with every month celebrating former ANC presidents.

R100 million if you use your nepotistic kickback-driven BEE contractors with government links - under R50 million if you make use of established non-BEE businesses!
But why try to save money - a R100 million party sounds so much better!

If people really cared for the poor, they would also in their private personal capacity make contributions (albeit small) towards the upliftment of the poor. However, this is not so. South Africans generally have a culture of over-indulgence (which is unfortunate), hence the expensive holidays that people undertake with their families during the festive season, conveniently forgetting that there are people who are extremely poor.

So, it is hypocritical for some people to decry the fate of the poor when they themselves are not part of the festivities.

The thing is the ANC (despite its recent weaknesses) is not a micky mouse party of yesterday. The party has been around and led one of the bravest struggle for freedom on the african continent.
The money will come from the volunteers.

It is not a big deal. Business people and other friends of the ANC will provide. I think we should concede that this is a special occassion in the history of the ANC - celebrating 100 years. I agree with Baleka on this one, it is worth every cent.

R100 million is not a big deal??????? Do you live under a rock or in the same country as I do? Where families are homeless and starving and where people are dying of HIV because the Government can't provide free medication or proper healthcare to everyone!!!! Yes it is a special occasion and it does indeed call for a celebration, but what sort of a message is the ANC sending to the young generation?? That it's okay to waste money as long as it's someone else's money!!!!! UTTER NONSENSE!!!!!!

@Undress you are quite right . It is in the best interests of the private sector to uplift the poor , as that increases the domestic market. They more money the poor have , the more customers private business has. They will not give money because they know it is not going to a noble cause but instead to line the pockets of despicable cadres. How about this , instead of getting BEE accreditation for employing black faces , how about getting BEE accreditation for tangible poor community upliftment ? ie Build a school and fund it with quality teachers ? That way the teachers are employed privately and not keen to strike , the graduates of the school are top quality and can be employed by business because they add value ...it's not rocket science.

Private Sector must help the goverment with funding of all national needs i.e education, housing, roads, etc hence the ANC see it feed to make a party for R100m. South Africa is led by party loving leaders as long as is a party they can spent the money they claim they don't have for different national needs. Ag anyway is the same money they squander on tenders for pals - why worry!!!
Avatar

I think you must go tell that to the private sector. The thing is the private sector is profit-driven, and they will make whatever move they deem 'strategic' as long as at the end of the day it will accrue them some benefits

The private sector pays vast amounts of tax which should be serving our national needs. The fact that the ANC gets away with squandering it and not spending it on national needs is the fault of the voters who keep voting for the ANC. Blaming Mbeki or Zuma and not realising that for every Zuma/Mbeki kicked out a worse leader will simply replace. Get the ANC out and TAX money will go towards serving the nation and not just the elite.

No doubt the usual cronies will form a queue for tenders and positions after the celebrations as a big thank you from the deployed cadres in key government positions for funding this extravagance!!

Didn't Helen Zille ditch a party on Woman's Day a little while back and use the money for a scholarship program for girls instead? ...just saying...

Lets just be frank and say that actually they're spending R100m on the first 86 years of the ANC because things went a bit pear shaped over the last 14 or so years to be quite honest...

The problem is in South Africa there is no solution to the ANC. At least in the short-term. The NATS (read whytes) were in power and they squandered; the ANC (read blacs) are in power, and they are squandering. Perhaps what SA needs next is the Minority Front (Rajbanzi) taking over. The colords and Indans have not had their fair chance.
