The conviction of ANC Youth League spokesman Floyd Shivambu smacks of a witch-hunt, the organisation's president, Julius Malema, said on Wednesday.

Last week, the ANC's national disciplinary committee found Shivambu guilty of misconduct for swearing at a journalist and for accusing the ruling party of associating with imperialists in a statement.

Malema told reporters in Johannesburg that Shivambu had issued the statement on behalf of the league and not in his personal capacity.

"He [Shivambu] was not the author."

Shivambu was suspended from the party for three years and told to vacate his position as spokesman.

"He remains an employee of the youth league until the youth league decides to retrench him," said Malema.

"You don't have to be elected as a spokesperson of the youth league."

Malema said it was not right for Shivambu to be fired for being a contact person on a statement.

I agree with Foolius that comrade Shitvambu was unfairly targetted - the entire ANCYL should have been suspended for three years instead!

When did this mini-me-tyrant ever gainsay the ANCYL statement when the "Fit-(first) hit-the Shan"? All of the leaders were full of bravado when the media first questioned them on their statement. They certainly enjoyed the limelight that the media were bestowing on them.

Get a life Times Live we want articles on leaders that matter. we don't want to hear anything on the ANCYL unless it';s about their arrest on fraud, corruption or tax evasion. These are the things that have to do with the poor as these are the things they did to rip off the poor

ANCYL agents have infiltrated TimesLive workplace. Sane comments from reasonable folk don't stand a chance of surviving the total onslaught from the kindergarten crowd!

With the ongoing complaining about getting their just desserts, do Malema and company not understand that they have been thrown to the wolves by the top echelons of the ANC?

The wolves are the Hawks who are busy with an investigation into tender irregularities on the part of Malema and probably some of his buddies.

I believe we will see Malema and co completely neutralised in due course, so busy will they become trying to simply stay out of jail - and that is undoubtedly the strategy!

They would do better to simply keep their silence right now, rather than arrogantly and continually stir the waters!
