Talk of moving parliament to Pretoria

The ANC has placed the relocation of parliament to Pretoria squarely back on the table.

According to Beeld, senior ANC MP Vincent Smith said during question time in the National Assembly on Wednesday that the fact that parliament sits in Cape Town needed to be revised urgently.

"The decision to house the executive authority, the legislative and judicial authority in separate places was as a result of a political arrangement in 1910 by a white government," said Smith.

He said that decision led to unnecessary costs for travel and accommodation, and had an effect on productivity.

The money could be better spent, he argued.

Congress of the People MP Graham McIntosh proposed that if there was a relocation to Pretoria, the Cape Town parliament complex be used for the Pan African parliament.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said travel costs for Treasury officials came to R5-million between April and October this year.

He said MPs were welcome to discuss the matter.

This is a fantastic idea. Long overdue. It will save a lot of money and rid the Western Cape of the ANC robbers. Sommer change the name of Pretoria to Tswane then all the losers like the Blue Bulls and the ANC can live together. The Western Cape is the homeland for the civilized and educated. One day soon we will declare it an independent state.

It spells dire consequences for CT and Bloem economies.
What else would CT hold claim to, it would simply become another East London with only a beach and a mountain to its name.

Its probably a good thing to have one capital nonetheless.

"...as a result of ... a white government,"

You see. Its comments like that which just have no place in my life.
The split of the parliament was a compromise. It wasn't some kind of arbitrary decision based on a colour coded racial idea.

Having said that, I fully support the proposal.

Makes great economic sense - but I'm afraid this talk is merely politically driven. Having said that, where will they move to after Pretoria (once Gauteng is also under DA rule?).

The cost (R5 million) is petty cash compared to, say what is being paid to suspended Directors General. All of a sudden the ANC has become cost conscious?

The truth is that they must be embarrassed to visit a City That Works, where their R million+ cars don't hit potholes around every corner.

The R5 million (travel only) was only a fraction of the costs incurred. You still have to factor in the accomodation, food, drink and entertainment costs (like the obligatory ZAR sushi parties, etc)

This will really cramp the anc's style. What excuse will they use now to own two cars, two houses, and stay in the best hotels in Cape Town.

Not such a bad idea. Would make government more efficient. Just dont know where the money is going to come from to construct an entire new parliament building.

"arrangement in 1910 by a white government," said Smith

The ANC never seizes to amaze me.

Was that white government not responsible for the construction of this wonderful diverse economy we have today? infrastructure..........infact, how much has the ANC done on 20 years compared to what the white government did in 100 years.

The ANC could never build a $400 billion economy in 100 years like the previous white governments did.

Compare to size of the SA economy in 1994 (with close to 10 years of economic sanctions) to what it is today 20 years later under ANC leadership.

We understand apartheid was a terrible political system for the dignity of black people, but what ever happened during apartheid did justice in growing Africa's biggest economy.

(OT) @Saif: RDP houses are no more "given out" (to sell freely) than social housing is in Europe; and if you don't have a job, the governments there give you money to pay for that social housing and extra on top.
A little more education helps avoid making ignorant statements all round...

(Apologies; hit the "report" button rather than "reply"...).

the sooner the ANC leaves the Cape Republic the better!

The Cape Party was founded in 2007.
In 2008, the Cape Party was officially registered with the Independent Electoral Commission
(IEC) as a political party in the Republic of South Africa.
The Cape Party will use all constitutional, legal and peaceful means to bring into effect the
independence and self-determination of the Cape from the Republic of South Africa.
If the Cape Party receives a majority vote in an election within the Cape territory this will be an
official mandate from the people of the Cape to declare the Cape a free and independent
Republic, the Cape Republic.
The Cape Republic will be governed as an independent state.
The Cape people will form the nation of the Cape Republic and actively engage in the
democratic and legal processes involved in the governance of the Cape.
Sound political and economic policies will further our aspirations to join the prosperous nations
of the world.
