Corruption is our biggest threat: Vavi

Corruption is the elite's way to steal from the poor, Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said on Thursday.

"It has become a matter of life and death. Corruption is the biggest threat to the realisation of our dreams," he told an anti-corruption summit in Johannesburg.

"Self-enrichment will unravel the fabric of society."

Vavi said up to 20% of government procurement was lost to corruption as officials exploited gaps in the system to procure government tenders.

"We are facing a nightmare future in South Africa... people are systematically using their power to secure... parts of society."

He said if the current economic system of capitalism continued with the "me first" mentality, it would be difficult to root out corruption.

"The culture of 'me first' accumulates and accumulates [so] that one person in this country earns R627-million per year... while workers earn less than R1 500 per month," said Vavi.

Some people start with all the good intensions and then one minion comes and offer them bribes and then all the good intensions go down the drain. Greed makes people blind and then they cry why when they get pointed out and send to jail.
Many people are going to jail soon! Corruption is a fast why of making quick money. Easy come easy go! Then you go to jail!

People with integrity will not accept bribes, but then I do not think there are many of them with integrity working in government.....from the head down.....

Why is John Block still MEC of Finance in the Northern Cape, and Castle still Premier. With Block facing so many charges why is he still managing such a powerful financial position? The ANC allows people to serve in powerful positions inspite of them standing on the wrong side of the law. If the claim is innocent until proven guilty, then why does he not go on leave until his case is over. I bet you we will soon hear another big scandal, I hear the Northern Cape Gambling Board is going after the Casino License that was awarded to that 100% BEE company in the Northern Cape and there is a court case emminent. Block appointed that Board.

Agree with Vavi, corruption is the biggest threat to our democracy. We pay these corrupted officials' salaries. Corruption in local government means poor service delivery. So this effects us directly, we have to put a stop to it by making everything that they do transparent. Mobilitate is great platform to do this on.

Mr Vavi, how many more times are you going to denounce corruption before you actually do something about it ? You beginning to sound like a stuck record (for the newer generation, the old vinyl records often got stuck playing a particular portion over and over until someone did something about it). This is our Mr Vavi, doing precisely the same thing. Here's an idea Mr Vavi, one of your buddies (a certain JZ) could help eradicate this. After all, he promised at the last eleections to "root out corruption". So, like the vinyl record, do something, bleat to the "boss", after all, you do have 1/3 share in the "business".
