Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has dismissed the Limpopo ANC Youth League statement that the timing of the placement of five provincial departments under administration was politically driven.

Responding to media questions on Thursday, Gordhan said a delegation was in Limpopo on the basis of concern by national cabinet to share some of its concerns with the provincial executive.

On Monday, Cabinet announced that the national government would take over the running of five Limpopo departments which were mismanaging their finances.

"The Intervention is in terms of Section 100 (1) B of the Constitution which stated national executive may take responsibility for certain areas if it thinks it necessary and take appropriate steps to ensure delivery takes place, agree that is the matter as province we need to work together and ensures that there is," he said.

He said anybody was entitled to speculate because of democratic process.

On Tuesday, the provincial youth league claimed it was a campaign aimed at terminating Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale's plan to be re-elected in the coming provincial conference.

Mathale is contesting the position of the provincial chairman with Joe Phaahla, who is the deputy minister of arts and culture.

Gordhan met Mathale and affected MEC's in Polokwane to explain why the Cabinet had decided to take control of the departments.

Mathale said the provincial executive would co-operate with Cabinet to ensure that there were sustainable solutions.
