DA Youth poster shocks Christian party

Sapa | 24 January, 2012 12:01
DA Youth poster.

A DA Student Organisation poster showing a young mixed race couple in a passionate clinch is "shocking", the Christian Democratic Party said on Tuesday.

"At a stage when the country needs higher levels of morality, the DA launches a poster clearly promoting sexual immorality," party leader Theunis Botha said.

"There are many ways in which the DA could have projected its image as a non-racial party, rather than using a poster clearly promoting sexual promiscuity."

Botha said the poster was "distasteful to the extreme" and an insult to the many young people, black and white, who uphold high moral values.

"In a country with high levels of Aids and an overdose of crime, especially the high incidence of farm murders this year, this poster sends the opposite message to the country than needed."

The poster carried a tagline reading: "In our future you wouldn't look twice".

It received widespread attention on Monday after it was posted online by DA youth leader Makashule Gana.

Gana said the poster was part of a campaign to create debate about race.

"To say that the poster is sexual is taking it to the extreme. The poster is saying a lot. They are embracing each other, and it shows in this country that we can find an opportunity to embrace each other.

"I don't know why there are negative comments about it. It is a work of art that depicts a future that we [the DA] would want to build."

Gana put the picture up on his Facebook page, and briefly used it as his Twitter avatar.

The picture elicited differing comments on both social networking sites.

A Facebook user said: "The nakedness completely diverts from the intended message of political togetherness. Unless politics really is all about sex?"

Another user said: "I don't see something sexual. They did this pic [sic] very well. The pose, the embrace, their expressions. It looks convincing, it looks like love, it looks beautiful."

One Twitter user asked: "Is the DA campaigning on behalf of white sugar-daddies who go after young native chicks?"

Another tweeted: "In my future, I hope those damn townships are gone in Cape Town and all the blacks have moved into Camps Bay to share that view."

In the light of Zulu king Zwelithini about same sex relationships being 'rotten' I think the DA youth should have come up with a man-on-man action poster featuring a 'warrior' and an "English soldier" re-enacting the Battle of Isandwana in a shower.

Lest we forget that it was also within the hypocrisy of Christianity that many people found justification for apartheid.

So true...religion can be used to justify almost any social injustice, action, stance etc. Religion is just like politics...only difference is the clothing...

christianity is the root of all evil.
it was christian missionaries who massacred hundreds of million ethnic inhabitants.
it was christian missionaries who captured people and sold them off as slaves.
it was christians who introduced, practiced and preached apartheid and racism.
it is the the church that is guilty of child molestation... from the pope down to the church mouse.

Once again the religeous fanatics have nothing useful to add except their constant bigotry and of course as far as the CDP is concerned the DA is damned if they do and damned if they don't.
Get a life...this poster promotes togetherness between black and white, isn't that what we all want!

Apart from the sexuality issue, this poster is so contrived and so clichéd, calling it tasteless would be a compliment...

Being contrived or clichéd is an entirely separate issue to being tasteless as they address entirely different issues. And as far as I'm concerned, as far as political poster go, it's as hell of a lot better than looking at the mugshot of a dour, humourless or corrupt politician. What do those posters say? Nothing. This one speaks volumes.

There is nothing wrong with this poster. There is a lot wrong with the hypocritical Christian community who sees the devil around every corner. Well done to the DA youth for this drive towards total equality.

I agree that the poster feels a bit contrived, and don't feel its message would have been compromised if the couple had been clothed. But the point is that race shouldn't be an issue in intimate relationships, so I don't 'get' why the Christian Democratic Party is making such a fuss about this image. Isn't it a basic tenet of Christianity that all people are equal and that love should be at the centre of all relationships? It seems to me that the moral outrage being expressed by the party is not only misplaced, but hypocritical.

The conversation between the two goes something like this:
He - "That was great, madam!"
She - "Now go put on your overalls and finish cleaning my pool before my husband comes home!"

Sir, I think you also miss the point in that you allege the African woman is a married and being disloyal to her husband. I do not suggest it would have been correct the other way. Such stereotypes widen the racial divide.
To the DA youth, I also think their drive for non-racial society could have been depicted in another form.

I don't understand how the Christian Democratic Party sees any sexual immorality in a simple hug. I suppose we should count ourselves lucky that the couple isn't kissing as that might really get the CDP's knickers in a twist. Beelzebub could be tearing his way up from hell itself just at the thought of such a "scandalous" and "immoral" display of affection.

I think the CDP have a point - the DA Student Organisation poster didn't need to feature a naked couple to get the non-racial political point across. A fully clothed couple would surely have got the same message through?
The caption reads "In our future, you wouldn't look twice" - but one would look twice if you came across a naked couple (irrespective of their race).

I do not agree with CDP's blah blah blah, but certainly I agree with those who say the poster could have been of a black man and a white woman. The black man has been demonised throughout history, and it could have added a little bit of flavour if the DA presented a different imagery.
The preservation of a white woman has over the years been an obsession of white masculinity.

Seal and Heidi Klum are also getting divorced. So, um not really the image you want? But more seriously, I take the point about black man-white woman. Does anyone remember INXS sang a song about interracial relationships back in the late 80's or early 90's?

This Botha clown has just in that one paragraph exposed not only how much of a bigot he is but just how really dumb he actually is,..I mean what does crime and farm murders have to do with interracial relationships? smh

Farm murders will be dragged into any debate -- even the petrol price or the fate of the Proteas cricket team. That's because idiots like Botha will seize any nearby stick to beat anything resembling a dog.

I think we have seen certain ads where people are completely without clothes but cover vital parts (especially in skin toning creams nd the like) but i have never heard the CDP complaining. I think this is just convinient for them to all of a sudden scream "morality" and not disgust. The fact that a white man is seen with a black woman is the problem for these racists including some on this forum and now they use the guise of "morality"......I think one of them yelled "Yuk!!!"......yup, we see you for who you are skin-head!!
Avatar

deebee

Posted 483 days ago
Good point Razzo - and quite frankly you can see more explicit pictures than this in virtually every agony aunt column where sex is discussed. So, yeah a bit stupid. Does anyone not think that the underlying message being portrayed is that they have nothing to hide from one another and nothing to be ashamed of? Maybe with a white dude they had to shoot the ad on a warm day, though...
