ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema has been stripped of his title and party membership, the National Disciplinary Committee of Appeals (NDCA) ruled.

It upheld the convictions of Malema and his executive as decided by the National Disciplinary Comittee (NDC) last year.

"Any sanction imposed by the NDC resulting in the imposition of a penalty of suspension of membership or expulsion from the ANC shall be applicable to the applelant's membership of the ANCYL," NDCA chairman Cyril Ramaphosa said on Saturday.

Former spokesman of the League, Floyd Shivambu, would also have to vacate his post with immediate effect.

Ramaphosa said that the sentences imposed would be reviewed by the NDC.

Both the ANC and the appellants would be able to present arguments to the NDC in this regard. The conviction against the league's secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa's for making potentially defamatory statements was upheld by the appeals committee.

He was ordered to apologise to Public Enterprise Minister Malusi Gigaba within five days for his "degrogatory" statement or face 18 months suspension.

Magaqa accused Gigaba of imperialist sympathies after he criticised the league over its comments on the nationalisation of mines.

The NDC last year found Malema guilty of provoking serious divisions in the league's parent body, the ANC, and bringing that organisation into disrepute.

Malema had said the league would send a team to Botswana to consolidate local opposition parties and help bring about regime change.

Charged alongside Malema, Shivambu, and Magaqa were deputy president Ronald Lamola, treasurer general Pule Mabe and deputy secretary general Kenetswe Mosenogi.
