Only ANCYL can fire leadership: Malema

Only the ANC Youth League has the right to dismiss its leaders, its embattled leader Julius Malema told delegates at the league's three-day lekgotla in Pretoria on Friday.

"If the youth says we must step down and resign, we are prepared to step down."

To applause, Malema said the leadership had effectively been found guilty of abiding by the resolutions of the league's 24th congress held in 2011.

"The basic lesson we have learned is that of democratic centralisation... we are guilty of thinking."

He said if the ANC had the right to fire the league's leaders, then it should be appointing the leadership which, he pointed out, it did not.

"We did not commit anything wrong against the movement. The only thing we did was to speak about how the land must be restored to its original owners."

He also reiterated the call for the nationalisation of mines, banks, and "monopolistic" industries.

This call for nationalisation was in line with the ANC's Freedom Charter, according to which the country's resources should belong to everybody in the country, he said.

Malema also had a dig at attempts to stifle debate about succession within the ANC.

"The succession battle should be discussed without fear or favour. It should not be a taboo topic."

Malema received a rousing welcome from delegates when he arrived at the lekgotla.

He made a quiet entrance at the St George's conference centre in Pretoria. But as soon as he was on stage, delegates broke out into loud singing before his opening speech.

ANCYL deputy president Ronald Lamola introduced Malema as the "chief commander of the economic freedom fighters". The country's Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe was also expected to speak.

Delegates toyi-toyed and sang before the conference started. Some of the songs being sung were "Bloemfontein 2012, we are voting for Malema" and "The shower man is troubling us", a reference to President Jacob Zuma.

The event was Malema's first public appearance since the ANC announced last Saturday that his appeal against his five-year suspension from the ANC had been rejected.

He, however, remains a party member until arguments in mitigation of his sentence have been concluded.

After going through the constitution of the ANC and the ANCYL, the former indeed doesn't have the right to expell the leadership of the later and vice versa. Both organisations can however recommend the dismissal of the respective leaderships, but the actual action needs to be effected by their constituances.

I fully agree with President Malema. We are supposed to be living in a democratic country, where everyone has the RIGHT to freedom of speech, and most definitely the freedom to think for ourselves and to act on it. I applaud President Malema's courage and vision. And sincerely hope that he will be a presidential candidate come 2014!

Oh my dear friend! It is so good to see you here! Thank you for the wonderful compliments, you always know how to brighten my day :) How have you been?

I totally agree with you. President Malema will bounce back from this. The failing "oppositions" managed to bring President Malema in a bad light. But I am hopeful that that Government will realise the important role played by youth leaders in this country, and offer them more support, and definitely a stronger voice in the decision making process of our country.

I wonder if the NDC will consider this "mitigating" or "aggravating"

Or he gets kicked out permanently when 'arguments in aggravation of his sentence' have been concluded. Cyril left the door wide open there.

I am indeed back after a well-deserved world trip. The most fabulous holiday imaginable. Upon my return, unfortunately, my account here was no longer in working order due to my extended absence, hence the dreadful 2X.

But that aside, I am glad to see that you are supporting President Malema on this. It is a pity that he has been suspended, but this is only preparing him for national elections in 2014, which really has me very excited

People must stop being misled by hyenas wearing black/green/gold with intention of looting the state resources, since Bheki Cele clip them down with shoot to kill call they have swap to politics.

Malema was nt suspended for calling nationalisation and expropriation , thats the reason Cyril Ramaphosa dismissed their appeal as baseless and unfounded because they are missing the point instead of CRITICALLY arguing the charges they argue things nt on charge sheet.

As a youth Malema must explain to us where he gets money, he must share that experience with us as so called leader, why he is sharing that experience with his cousin Tsepo Malema , whereas he tells us to much to Pta from JHb.

Noise from a windbag, nine days to go. When you are given a chance to mitigate you must be remorseful to the guilt of your petition. Only then can your sentence be mitigated, however this windbag has no remorse of his guilt and instead aggravates his own petition without any help from his accusers. Chivalry of a warthog, what a domkop. Nine days to go!

Why then submit yourself to a disciplinary process of an organisation that has no authority to punish you? Who's fooling who, here?

Comrade Malema, fire that useless Dali Mpofu.

The media gives Malema too much credit as it sells newspapers and swells his alter ego thinking himself above reproach and discipline. ANCYL votes count 10% together with MKVA and ANCWL, this 10% has to muster the minimum threshold of 25% for the nomination to stick on the ballot paper. That is the risk Motlanthe would not bear to fly the ANCYL tag. Its a non-starter.

You must be kidding me in thinking that 50% of the branches would give their votes to the ANCYL candidate who is going to further Malema agenda. Whoever shall become a Malema sponsored candidate (such as Tokyo, a failed premier and a capitalist) and cannot fight his or her own election battles is doomed. You need a candidate that is not tainted and can run the gauntlet against Zuma who seem to know how to wage a fight. Malema has badly calculated his fortunes just as he miscalculated his chances with the NDC and the NDCA. The ANC is far bigger than his alter ego and it's very cold outside the ANC. Malema also faces tenderprenuer charges that will land him in great poverty for a man used to finer indulgencies of capitalism. He will freeze into poverty let alone mobilise members in good standing to give their votes to a member not in good standing.

I know right! If it depends on these "oppositions" constantly trying to bring down the ONLY youth league in the country, as well as its leaders, it will be a tough battle to get President Malema to national elections. But so far campaigns are going well, and we are all hopeful.

Now I am smiling that you mentioned Zodwa :) My dear friend. A true-blooded South African leader! I hope she still uses Times Live, I haven't been around lately, been traveling the world, so haven't had contact with her.

My dearest Sweetness,

You can't be a presidential candidate when in yellow/orange garb with ankle restrictions to limit your spontaneous leg movements.

Unless, Sweetie, you have an alternative solution.

Issues as address by Malema and indeed ANCYL are genuine, let the economic struggle continue. You can’t shoot down Nationalization of mines from air conditioned offices with leather chairs while the majority is hungry. 50% tax for what....? We want OWNERSHIP OF our OWN NATURAL RESOURCES!
We as the youth of the ANC and South Africa will stand by Malema and ANCYL, we are leaving in shacks while minority is still leaving comfortably and just by the way is this not a reality comrade Zuma and Mantashe if it is not then ANC should cease to exist as it has achieve its objective of equal distribution of wealth!
We will support robust call by ANCYL for economic freedom in our lifetime IT’S THE ONLY WAY!
Comrades let us not be scared or be intimidated lets continue support our leaders until victory is certain otherwise our beloved ANCYL will be a puppet league dancing to the tunes of Tom and Harry!
VIVA ANCYL VIVA, VIVA Comrade Malema Viva. Long Leave the ANCYL Leave
THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!

The ANC have not fired him as the ANCYL leader. They suspended his ANC membership. You can not be eligible for election or hold any position within the ANCYL unless you are a member of the ANC. SO by losing his ANC membership he actually fired himself. So what is this poor guy rambling about?

If Julius Malema and his circle of privileged acquaintances were really concerned about the plight of the youth they would not be driving around in the luxury vehicles we have seen them arrive in at Winnie Mandela's residence last Saturday. Did nobody notice the fat and over-fed faces they have acquired over the last few years? They don't care about the rest. The main fatty continues to acquire material assets by...what? At least he now seems to realize that he might have to do some yellow time. Why does he suspect it? He knows his time is up.

The solution to our problems does not lie with plain criminals. They will not get anyone a job or land or a car. These are their privileges.
