"The ACDP welcomes the re-suspension of former crime intelligence head, Lt. Gen Richard Mdluli, pending the outcome of an investigation into his alleged involvement in a murder ten years ago," said spokesman Steve Swart on Sunday.

"The question arises as to why Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, allegedly ensured that Mdluli's previous suspension was lifted, particularly when further allegations relating to the abuse of a R300 million slush fund came to light... this is a cause of great concern," he said.

Swart said his party was concerned about the state of the criminal justice sector given that suspended national police commissioner Bheki Cele now faced a damning report against him.

Mdluli's suspension was announced on Sunday by the office of acting national police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and related to allegations that had emerged from the ongoing court inquest into the murder of Mdluli's former lover's husband Oupa Ramogibe in 1999.

Last year, Mdluli faced fraud and corruption charges relating to alleged misuse of a crime intelligence fund, the purchase of luxury vehicles and the hiring of family members.

He was suspended but both sets of charges were withdrawn and Mdluli was reinstated as head of crime intelligence in March this year.
