The Weekend Argus reported that Lekota would file papers on Monday, seeking a review and reversal of the decision, and an apology for himself and the Congress of the People.

Lekota criticised Zuma during the Presidency Budget Vote debate for not defending the constitutional rights of artist Brett Murray or City Press editor Ferial Haffajee.

The legal action would be directed towards Parliament and Deputy Speaker Nomaindia Mfeketo.

"It is a very dangerous precedent, if it’s not challenged and reversed. No member of the opposition may criticise the president... it has very serious implications for democracy," Lekota told the newspaper.

Parliament confirmed it had received notice that papers would be served, but said it would not comment until the papers were actually received.
