The ANC needs bold leaders who can drive economic transformation and change clauses in the Constitution to aid strategic nationalisation, its Limpopo branch said on Wednesday.

A proper ANC leader was not "captured by narrow business interests for personal economic gain", it said in a statement, following a provincial executive committee (PEC) meeting on Monday to discuss leadership.

The party needed leaders able to accommodate different political viewpoints, including from its leagues.

Leaders needed to be consistent when enforcing discipline within the organisation, and should not abuse state institutions for "factionalist (sic) goals", it said.

Limpopo is former ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema's home province.

"Members of the PEC reaffirmed the centrality of branches to evaluate and elect leadership.

"It also adopted a comprehensive discussion document to aid in facilitating discussions within the ANC structures on the type of ANC leadership to lead the ANC in the next five years."

The African National Congress was scheduled to hold its national elective conference in Mangaung in December. Nominations for leaders by the ANC's branches around the country would open in October.

The Limpopo ANC said: "Once the nominations process for leadership starts, our branches will announce on the specific names of people who should constitutes the ANC leadership."

According to the ANC's constitution, at least 90 percent of delegates at the elective conference would be from branches.

The number of delegates per branch would be in proportion to its paid-up membership. Each branch in good standing would be entitled to at least one delegate.

The number of delegates from each province was decided upon by the party's national executive committee (NEC).

The remaining 10 percent of voting delegates was allocated by the NEC from among the provincial executive committees, and its youth, veterans' and women's leagues.
