The arrest of three men for fraud relating to the building of the Mbombela stadium was "a good step" in the right direction, Mpumalanga premier David Mabuza said on Sunday.

"This is taking us into closing this chapter since this matter has been there for a very long time. We are not saying those who are arrested are guilty, but at least this will help all of us to know if there were irregularities or not," Mabuza said in a statement.

Three men appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court in connection with the matter. Herbert Theledi and Kaizer Chiefs manager Bobby Motaung were each granted R50 000 bail on Thursday.

Their co-accused Chris Gribb was granted R20 000 bail on Friday after he handed himself to police in Cape Town.

The trio allegedly forged SA Revenue Service documents to get a contract to build the Mbombela stadium for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

"We believe that with this move, at least the truth will prevail, and that there will [be] closure to this matter," Mabuza said.

The accused would be back in court on October 15.
