The SACP on Sunday called for the inquiry into the shooting of 34 miners in Marikana to investigate the role played by trade union Amcu.

"The presidential inquiry must also consider the pattern of violence associated with the pseudo-trade union Amcu," SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande told reporters in Johannesburg.

Nzimande alleged that the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union was funded by mining company BHP Billiton "in a deliberate attempt to undermine the National Union of Mineworkers.

"For all these reasons, the SACP firmly rejects the attempt to portray the events last week as being essentially rooted in trade union rivalry," he said.

On Thursday police shot dead 34 striking miners at Lonmin's operation in Marikana, in the North West. In the weeks preceding that, 10 people, including two police officers, were killed.

President Jacob Zuma announced the establishment of the commission of inquiry on Friday.
