The two new universities in Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape will start operations from early 2014, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande said on Thursday.

"We remain committed to developing the new universities in the shortest possible time and to commence with some academic programmes in 2014," he told reporters in Cape Town.

The university in Mpumalanga will be based at the Lowveld Agricultural College, and the one in the Northern Cape in Kimberley.

Nzimande said work would soon begin on fleshing out "the potential academic focus" of the universities, and on planning their actual construction.

He declined to make public the funding model for the new institutions, pending a final decision from National Treasury.
