Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi is an articulate and honest leader, expelled ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema said on Tuesday.

"I am not very close to Vavi. He is not my friend but I like his leadership style," Malema told reporters in Johannesburg.

"He is an honest leader... he is articulate."

Last week, Congress of SA Trade Unions spokesman Patrick Craven said Malema should not try to ingratiate himself with Vavi.

"Cosatu dismisses with contempt the attempt by... Malema to ingratiate himself with the leadership of Cosatu by praising... Vavi."

In an interview with the Mail & Guardian, Malema said: "I have nothing against Vavi and will always support and defend him as a brother and comrade... We speak one language with him. He is the only revolutionary remaining in Cosatu."

Malema was speaking in Sandton, accompanied by suspended ANCYL spokesman Floyd Shivambu and secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa.
