Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula has criticised Cosatu for its suggestion that the ANC should retain its current leadership, according to a report.

The Mail&Guardian reported on Friday that following uncontested re-election as president and general secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions, Zwelinzima Vavi and Sidumo Dlamini said Cosatu's decision of not contesting top positions should inspire the ANC.

"I don't know what informed Cosatu not to contest, but the ANC branches must not be pre-empted to adopt a hereditary approach. We never interfered in Cosatu's internal process," Mbalula said.

"Therefore the internal processes of the ANC must [also] be respected."

No one needed to be demonised for expressing their views on their preferred candidates to take the leadership of the ANC, he said.

"You can't preach unity without examining the leadership. It never happened in the ANC."
