Hawks spokesman McIntosh Polela on Sunday refused to comment on media reports that Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale was under investigation.

"We don't want to comment on unfounded allegations," Polela said.

The Sunday Independent reported that Mathale was being investigated by the Hawks for alleged irregularities in tenders awarded by provincial departments, including a R314 million pharmaceutical tender.

Mathale's spokeswoman, Mashadi Mathosa, told the paper the premier was not aware of the allegations.

"We cannot make comments on something that is unknown to us," she reportedly said.

On Tuesday, On-Point director Kagisho Dichabe, chief executive Lesiba Gwangwa, Makgetsi Manthatha and Helen Moreroa appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court, on charges of corruption, fraud and money laundering.

They were granted bail of R40,000 each.

The Sunday Independent reported that Mathale could be accused alongside Manthatha.
