Zuma drops Zapiro case

President Jacob Zuma has withdrawn his claim for damages against a Zapiro cartoon published in the Sunday Times and agreed to pay half of its legal costs.

The cartoon by Jonathan Shapiro, better known as Zapiro, depicted Zuma unbuckling his trousers as his political allies held down a woman representing 'Lady Justice'.

"President Zuma did the right thing in withdrawing the case. This bodes very well for media freedom," Dario Milo, who represented the Sunday Times, told the paper.

"It is to be hoped that he swiftly withdraws his other 12 live cases against the media. This will send out an important signal that the president respects the right of the media to criticise his conduct."

The withdrawal ends a four-year saga that began in 2008 when Zuma sued for R4 million in damages to his reputation and R1 million for injury to his dignity.

Zuma recently dropped his claim to R100,000 and a demand for an apology.

The case was to be heard in the High Court in Johannesburg on Monday.

Shapiro told the Sunday Times that he had "mixed feelings" about the withdrawal as he believed he would have won the court case "hands down".

"This is a vindication of what I was saying in the cartoon and it's a vindication of the Sunday Times for publishing it," Shapiro said.

Well that is how it should be. At least freedom of expression has not been compromised. A big question that remains is to who is going to pay Zuma's half of the legal fees? Will it be the taxpayer?

The only way to damage JZ's reputation, would be do draw a cartoon of him doing something useful.

Zuma received an increase of R20 million rands for his legal fees from the treasury, the man is a liabilty to the taxpayers. He will need most of this money to fight to stay out of jail. Mr President where are the spy tapes?

This useless crook Zuma new that if he had to fight this small issue in Court....it would lead to bigger issues that he would lead to bigger things....

Hulley and Co are trying to keep him out of Court. Because, once it starts, Zuma is absolutely fulcked. Hulley is white trash. Why give advice to a thief like Zuma...

Hulley needs to go down like Zuma. The sooner, the better.

If opposition parties in this country could speak with one voice and contest the coming elecetions as one party, they would stand a chance against Zuma. I for one I am not going to waste my vote on this corrupt trash again.

Clearly Micheal Hully does deserve his Christmas bonus after all. Averting disaster so close to Magaung. Tjo it would have been catastrophic. DSTV couldn't have organised a better roast. To quote the man himself: it would not have been so........ "Delicious" .

Isn't it woderful how our president demands his day in court and then spares no public expense not to have it?

Paying only half of Shapiro's legal bill is an insult. It just shows that only rich people can afford civil cases in SA. I do not know who pays the other half of Shapiro's legal cost but it is ridiculous, the case is dropped and he probably had to pay at least R100000 in legal fees already. Zuma just tries to shut up anybody who criticises him. This case shows that even the threat of getting sued would cost you money because Zuma can afford to threaten to sue anybody and the state picks up his legal bill even if in the end he admits that he has no case.

The only reason Zuma has cowardly dropped his case against Zapiro, is that he would be cross examined on the witness stand. He would then be forced to answer some difficult questions without a script for him to giggle over. Questions and answers that would undoubtably show him up for the corrupt president that we all know that he is.

The So-called President must pay from his pocket. Zuma has never been responsible. Do you think the guy has ever built even a single rondvel. Even his elder son is owing the wedding organiser. Why marrying in style if you cannot afford. Zumas are crooks they just good at giggling and wasting our hard earned rands.

Zuma finally folded on his lawsuit against Zapiro & is compelled to pick up all the legal fees in what was nothing more than a drawn out legal misadventure.

And once again guess who gets to pick up the tab?

Just you and me and our VAT!

Freedom of speech should be aloud but within boundries which clearly need to be defined! Our justice system turnaround time needs to be improve resulting in legal fees being reduced. The system will be more fair and limit reputational loss.

Due to his position and his lack of credible leadership he must be willing to take the punches. Waste of taxpayers money because of aimless legal action, respect freedom of the press and speech " as jy wil uitstaan soos n piesang moet jy bereid wees om geskil te word"

Zuma did the right thing to drop the case against Zapiro to show the world that he is for "freedom of speech" and to save the tax payers.
