New bail conditions for NPA prosecutor

Two new bail conditions were imposed on a prosecutor accused of corruption in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Phumzile Msimango, 33, was not allowed to enter the premises of the National Prosecuting Authority and could not contact any of its staff without authorisation.

Msimango was absent because of illness, but her lawyer Clinton Short said she had no objections to the new bail conditions, as she had signed her letter of suspension. She also signed a formal notice for her bail conditions.

Clinton said Msimango was at a doctor's surgery, as she had suffered a stress-related panic attack.

"She will produce a medical certificate," he said.

Msimango would appear in court again on August 8.

She allegedly told an advocate that a case of fraud and assault against his client could be made to disappear for a fee. She allegedly asked for R1 000.

A trap was set and a sworn statement was obtained from the advocate. The money was handed over. Police officers entered the magistrate's court while it was in session and conducted a search. The marked notes were allegedly found Msimango's possession and she was arrested on July 9.
