The increased matric pass rate in key subjects is a trend that should be reinforced in 2013, Parliament's basic education portfolio committee said on Thursday.
The committee congratulated the matric class of 2012 for increasing the overall pass rate from 70.2 percent to 73.9 percent.
"The 2012 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results signal great improvement and positive lessons towards an improved schooling system," committee chairwoman Hope Malgas said in a statement.
It would continue improved oversight of Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga's strategy.
"During oversight activities and presentations made to the committee on the readiness for the NSC last year the committee had noted good systemic planning and interventions drawn from the lessons learnt in 2011 and 2010, when the pass rate stood at 67.8 percent."
Malgas commended the minister and her department for the upward trend in the Mathematic pass rate, from 46.3 percent in 2011 to 54 percent, as well as in Physical Science, from 54.3 percent to 61.3 percent over the same period.
"This is critical for the enhancement of economic growth, global competitiveness and prosperity in the country."
