The South African Council of Churches (SACC) has responded to the Public Protector's report by saying those implicated should consider stepping down.
"For the future of the nation and the sustainability of our fledgling democracy, we urge those implicated in the report to consider stepping down," the organisation said in a press release.
The council also said that the report on Nkandla "should be interrogated, not on the timing of its release, but the merits of the contents therein and the implications for the country."
Further the SACC said that the report has primacy over ministerial commissions of enquiry, as those can also be investigated.
"We the SACC, regret that some religious leaders allegedly sought to undermine the credibility of this office in the name of the church," the organisation said in a statement.
"Such beacons of our constitutional democracy should be respected and safeguarded by all."
