The DA on Tuesday demanded access to all documents relating to Eskom's awarding of a R4 billion tender to replace steam generators at the Koeberg nuclear power plant.

Reports of "strong political interference" in the awarding of the contract were "deeply concerning", Democratic Alliance MP Gordon Mackay said.

This was highly irregular and could pose a major nuclear safety threat.

"Media reports suggest that the minister of public enterprises may have been deliberately misled by senior members of the Eskom board of directors, duping the minister into awarding the steam generator replacement contract contrary to the recommendations of Eskom's technical team and 'excops' committee which consists of senior Eskom managers."

Gordon wanted Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown to make all documents relating to the tender available to the party.

The documents include the decision of a technical team regarding the tender, the findings of the board-ordered technical review, and all other records of the tender.

Failing this, the party would submit a Promotion of Access to Information Act application.

Last month, Eskom's board of directors announced it had awarded the contract to French company Areva NP Proprietary.

The new generators are expected to be installed in 2018.
