The ANC Youth League's elective conference, scheduled for this week, has been postponed, an official said on Monday.

"We are giving a chance to KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Limpopo and Western Cape to complete their regional and provincial conferences, to allow as many people as possible to be part of this historic conference," national co-ordinator Magasela Mzobe said.

"We don't want, at the end of the process, to have any members feel like they were left out."

Mzobe denied that the conference had been postponed because of financial constraints.

Under the former leadership of now Economic Freedom Fighters head Julius Malema the organisation ran up extensive debt, which led to liquidation cases against the ANCYL.

The league's elective conference was supposed to be held from September 24 to 28. The youth league was disbanded last year, and the leadership replaced with a national task team.

Last month, task team convenor Mzwandile Masina said the ANCYL had stabilised and was ready to elect new leaders.

On Monday, Mzobe said a new conference date had not been set, but that it would definitely happen before the end of the year. The decision to postpone had been communicated to the ANC.

Mzobe is one of the nominees for the position of ANCYL president. Others include former ANCYL treasurer Pule Mabe, and former deputy president Ronald Lamola.

Official nominations for the leadership positions take place at provincial general councils.
