Ekurhuleni Mayor Mondli Gungubele said sport stars would continue to perish unless communities maintain order in places where they live.

Gungubele who was paying tribute to the late Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa, during a council meeting in Germiston, yesterday, said it was the duty of communities to protect their icons.

"Our sport stars will continue to die unless society produces order. It is the duty of society to produce order and police can only maintain order," he said.

Gungubele said no normal person would have pulled the trigger to kill Meyiwa.

Meyiwa was gunned down over the weekend in Ekurhuleni township of Vosloorus.

"A great talent whose young life was snuffed out of him right here in Ekurhuleni, Vosloorus to be more precise."

"It is proper that we assure the rest of the country and the world that as the City of Ekurhuleni we shall leave no stone unturned in our contribution towards finding Meyiwa's killers."

Gungubele recalled heroic saves that Meyiwa pulled in between goal posts for both Pirates and the national squad.

"This rare young talent has left us too soon."
