I am not a criminal: Phiyega

National police commissioner Riah Phiyega was at pains to point out to MPs on Wednesday that she was not involved in crime.

"Firstly, on the record, I do want to say I am not a criminal," Phiyega told Parliament's police portfolio committee.

"I have no criminal offences."

Phiyega made the statement while briefing the committee on compliance with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate's (Ipid) recommendations.

"I welcome the outcome of the investigation that was undertaken by Ipid. I made myself available so that I can answer to the questions they put before me. An outcome has been made public. I welcomed that," she said.

She also welcomed the National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) finding on the matter.

In October last year, the Ipid said it would probe allegations that Phiyega had tipped off Western Cape police commissioner Arno Lamoer about an investigation against him by crime intelligence.

When it completed its investigation, it referred the docket to National Director of Public Prosecutions Mxolisi Nxasana.

The NPA said in September it would not pursue complaints of defeating the ends of justice against Phiyga.
