Delegates at the EFF's first national assembly started trickling into the University of the Free State's main hall in Bloemfontein on Sunday morning as the party prepared to elect its top six leaders.

Party leader Julius Malema was expected to open the conference and deliver the political report.

Those already inside the hall ululated and screamed as the Economic Freedom Fighters' MPs walked in. Chief Whip Floyd Shivambu and spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi were among the first to arrive.

The hall was decorated with EFF colours. Delegates in red takkies, dresses, pants, and headgear, sang and danced to music, including the song "Tshela thupa" loosely translated as "the whipping or punishment is coming", a popular song among EFF members.

Others took pictures of themselves with the large stage in the background.

At the door delegate and their bags were thoroughly searched.
