Pikitup strike is over: Gauteng MEC Jacob Mamabolo

An agreement between the government and the South African Municipal Workers Union has been reached marking the end of the strike. The Gauteng government and the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) will today sign agreement marking the end of the strike which has left the City of Johannesburg in state of dirt and uncollected waste and garbage‚ the provincial government says.Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements‚ Jacob Mamabolo‚ has been in talks with both parties and the engagements will culminate with the signing of the agreement this afternoon‚ the government statement added.A majority of Pikitup's 5‚200-strong workforce has been on strike.The union had been demanding an increase in salary from R6‚000 to R10‚000. It also wanted Pikitup to look into alleged salary disparities and end the use of casual labour. Strikers also demanded the removal of some managers.The terms of the agreement are not known as yet...
