EFF leader Julius Malema has expressed doubts over whether Mmusi Maimane can handle himself as leader of the DA, saying he can make a very good priest but 'he is no politician'.

“Politics don’t need pastors. They need politicians. The DA is going to be converted into a church,” Malema said according to SA Breaking News.

“Helen Zille was a strong politician. It’s can’t be said with Maimane. From there it will be the end of the party.”

Maimane is currently the favourite candidate for taking over Helen Zille's position in the DA, after she announced that she wouldn't be running for the position of DA leader again earlier this month.

“We’ve accepted the nomination to stand for leader and so now we await the congress on 9 and 10 May and we’ll be campaigning for the position. Ultimately, whoever the leader will be will have the great immense task of growing this party and taking the people of this country to the levels that South Africa needs to go to,” Maimane said on accepting the nomination.

DA chairperson Wilmot James is expected to challenge Maimane for the position after Gauteng DA leader John Moodey decided against throwing his hat in the ring.

Malema also criticised President Jacob Zuma, saying that while he had paid the taxes he owed, "Zuma went to take from the tax coffers to build his house, I never did that. I never took from the state."
