Cope attacks opposition parties over Nkandla visit

Next month’s visit to Nkandla “is a ploy to sanction further expenditure on the president’s homestead”‚ the Congress of the People (Cope) said. On Tuesday‚ Parliament’s ad-hoc committee set up to look into police minister Nathi Nhleko’s report on the R246-million worth of upgrades on Jacob Zuma’s private home agreed to take members to see the site.Cope’s Dennis Bloem said it was “surprising that some opposition parties are co-operating” with the African National Congress on what it called an “illegal and unconstitutional committee”.“The real purpose of the visit is to justify and support further upgrades recommended by Nhleko‚” he said.The visit‚ said Bloem “is an additional waste of taxpayers’ money” and “members of the ruling party‚ we know‚ will never disapprove of these additions…the matter is already decided”.By participating in this ad hoc committee‚ opposition parties‚ would “contribute to undermining the Constitution and the chapter nine institutions‚ especially the office of the Public Protector”‚ whose ruling the ruling party “long declared…were not enforceable”‚ said Bloem.Cope will not be taking part in the ad-hoc committee‚ and Bloem urged other opposition parties to “review their positions and withdraw from the committee before it is too late”...
