MEC calls for an end to deadly family feud

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport‚ community safety and liaison‚ Willies Mchunu on Tuesday called for an end to the conflict between the Mthembu and Shange families in KwaMtamontengayo‚ near Zwelibomvu in Durban‚ which has claimed the lives of four people. “We cannot accept that so many people have been killed in this conflict. History has taught us that violence should be avoided at all costs‚ as it breeds never ending grudges‚ hatred and death.“I will task a team from our department of community safety and liaison to work with the police and the community safety structures to look thoroughly into this incident and conduct communities-in-dialogue. I also urge the families to work in partnership with us‚” Mchunu said.He called for the establishment of peace structures‚ urging community leaders to lead the process.On Saturday 31-year-old Bongani Shozi was shot and killed‚ while Sizwe Shange‚ who was also shot‚ is in a critical condition in hospital.“Reports reveal that‚ the incident follows the killing of Mathintimpi Shange who was a sangoma. It also follows the killing of an induna and his son who were accused of taking Shange’s side‚” a statement from Mchunu’s office said.Two counts of murder are being investigated by the police. No arrests have been made.Mchunu on Tuesday also called on the residents of Glebe Hostel in Umlazi‚ Durban‚ to end the ongoing conflict which has resulted in a number of deaths.He was speaking in the wake of the murder of yet another man‚ Thandayiphi Cwele‚ 40‚ who was shot and killed on Sunday.
