Mkhondo residents dig own pit toilets: DA

Some Mpumalanga residents have to dig their own pit toilets because RDP houses have no running water and sanitation‚ the Democratic Alliance said in a statement. The houses‚ which have kitchens‚ bathrooms‚ toilets and taps but no water delivered to them‚ are in the Mkhondo Local Municipality in the Piet Retief (eMkhondo) area‚ the party said.This comes after the attorney general announced earlier this week that only R501 million of the national budget of R1‚2 billion for the provision of water and sanitation in the period 2010-2013 had been spent.The AG’s audit report of municipal finances of 2013-2014 found that in the past five audits of the Mkhondo municipality‚ four had received disclaimer options‚ the DA said. Other findings were that the municipality had limited skills‚ struggled to keep proper records and could not account for progress on service delivery objectives stated in their implementation plan because it was unable to submit on its annual performance review for audit purposes.The party said it had written to the Minister of Water and Sanitation‚ Nomvula Mokonyane‚ to ask that portable water and interim sanitation was delivered to Mkhondo...
