An EFF member has been accused of illegally selling plots of land in Mpumalanga for at least R10 000 each.

Edwin Mshika, from Mataffin near Mbombela, is out on bail of R1 000 after he was arrested by the Nelspruit Commercial Branch unit on November 13.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Gerald Sedibe told News24 that Mshika is one of 14 suspects arrested in connection with the alleged scam and that more arrests are imminent.

"Fourteen suspects have been arrested so far and they are expected to appear in court together on December 8," said Sedibe.

EFF provincial leader Collen Sedibe has confirmed that Mshika is an EFF member.

"He said he was arrested at his house on Friday... and taken to the police station where he was charged with selling the plots illegally at Mataffin," said Collen Sedibe.

He accused ANC councillors of setting up Mshika for blowing the whistle against them.

"He [Mshika] said they are now accusing him of being involved in the illegal selling of the plots," Collen Sedibe said.

Meanwhile, eight people, including two Mbombela politicians, will appear in the same court on December 8 in connection with an arson case that is believed to be related to an illegal land sale.

Mbombela ward councillor Kenneth Mkhonto, member of the Mbombela mayoral committee Constance Maseko, Wonder Phuri, Nomcebo Mashele, Jerry Siboza, Bongani Mabunda, Dumisani Makhubela and Frazer Nyoni have been charged with malicious damage to property and arson in July this year.

They have not been asked to plead and are out on R1 000 bail.
