'DA caucus asked 86 times more parliament questions than ANC'

The official opposition has audited the ruling party caucus’ performance in the National Assembly this year and declared it “dismal”. The Democratic Alliance chief whip in the legislature‚ John Steenhuisen‚ said his African National Congress (ANC) counterpart‚ Stone Sizani‚ “owes South Africa an explanation” after his party’s Member of Parliament “submitted a meagre 39 written questions to the executive this year”.“Closer examination reveals that only 16 of the ANC’s 249 member caucus – a minute 6.4% – were responsible for asking those questions‚” Steenhuisen said.“In comparison‚ every DA MP has submitted a written question to a minister this year. In total‚ the DA caucus asked more than 3300 questions – approximately 86 times more questions than the ANC has asked.”The ministers were called to account by the DA in 272 questions to basic education‚ 206 to social development‚ 197 to co-operative governance and traditional affairs‚ 150 to water and sanitation‚ 130 to health and 117 to finance. “MPs are paid a sizeable salary‚ and the ANC’s poor performance is the clearest indication yet that they do not take their responsibilities or oath to Parliament seriously‚ only their pay cheques‚” said Steenhuisen...
